
Making Bathroom Heaters That Won’t Hurt Your Eyes
Ever stepped into a bathroom and felt that blinding glare from the ceiling heater? It’s annoying, sure. But for babies or anyone with sensitive eyes, that high-intensity light and UV radiation can actually be a problem for the retina. So, we decided to change how the light works. Instead of letting all that harsh energy fly out, we use special coatings and gas fills to filter the bad stuff. We basically push the energy into the long-wave infrared band. The result? You get the warmth, but not the blinding light. How we get the heat without the glare Most of these heaters use quartz tubes filled with halogen. By tweaking the halogen cycle and adding a selective coating to the glass, we can block the glare without losing the heat. It creates this nice, soft glow instead of a spotlight. And since it’s radiant heat, it hits your skin directly. You aren’t waiting around for the air in the room to warm up—which is a lifesaver if you have high ceilings. You just turn it on, and you feel it. Immediately. The balancing act Designing these things is a bit of a tug-of-war. We use reflectors to control where the heat goes. If we make the beam too tight, the floor gets toasted, but you risk creating “hot spots” that can sting if you stand too close. To keep your eyes and skin safe, we widen the spread. Sure, that means the floor doesn’t get quite as hot, but it’s much safer. It’s all about finding that sweet spot between wattage and distance so the lamp doesn’t burn itself out trying to reach the ground. A quick warning on installation If you’re wiring these into a ceiling, don’t just cram them in there. Even with the filters, those tubes get incredibly hot. You need high-temp wiring and, more importantly, plenty of breathing room in the fixture. If the housing is too tight, the heat just backs up into the socket. And trust me, that’ll fry your connectors way before the lamp actually wears out. Give it some air, and it’ll last.
